But for a non-option QB? It's an even more elite company that Wolf finds him in ... one that doesn't exist in the modern era.JWFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04806132873192103303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-915141113638142265.post-7061585122811173162009-08-18T12:44:53.069-05:002009-08-18T12:44:53.069-05:00@nightfly - good point about the cycle not necessa...@nightfly - good point about the cycle not necessarily being the best offensive feat for a pitcher to achieve.

But it certainly is rare.

Perhaps we could simply rely on total bases to determine a better performance? Either way, the key to this night was having the offensive performance on the same night as the almost-no hitter.JBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15290053120799507425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-915141113638142265.post-38286293878514161532009-08-18T12:25:42.709-05:002009-08-18T12:25:42.709-05:00If pigs had wings......If pigs had wings......dtoddwinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-915141113638142265.post-7118642272102819652009-08-18T10:21:20.105-05:002009-08-18T10:21:20.105-05:00Good article, and Wolf did have one hell of a game...Good article, and Wolf did have one hell of a game... but I'd say that a cycle, while impressive, is not the peak of offensive achievement in baseball. Hitting three homers in a game would be superior, for example, if for no other reason than the batter scores on the play instead of possibly being stranded on the bases.

Of course, neither has a pitcher gone yard three times in a game, as far as I can recall. Rick Wise is the gold standard there: two dingers and a no-hitter against the Reds in 1971. That would have to be the greatest overall game a pitcher has enjoyed, if one includes offense.

It would be interesting to add the offensive and defensive game scores of Wolf's game and Wise's game (and a few others) to see what happens.nightflyhttp://thenightfly.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-915141113638142265.post-76943016626417091692009-08-17T15:13:04.784-05:002009-08-17T15:13:04.784-05:00Bloody fantastic article, Walter.Bloody fantastic article, Walter.JBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15290053120799507425noreply@blogger.com
